On Feb. 1, Saints legend Drew Brees was on hand as Smalls Sliders celebrated the “Can Opening” of its first Greater New Orleans location at 4580 Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Smalls calls its locations “cans” since they are constructed using metal shipping containers.
Located right smack dab in front of Target at Clearview, the cheeseburger joint with the bright orange roof is owned by Brees, Jason Loezel and Ben Smith. Its opening was timed perfectly for Mardi Gras and, to the delight of locals, King Cake Shakes are on the menu!
Founded by White Castle native Brandon Landry (that’s White Castle, Louisiana, not White Castle, the competitor), Smalls Sliders opened its first location in 2018. Their slogan: We sweat the Smalls Things. Now Smalls has 250 restaurants open or on the way – most with lines out the door. Nation’s Restaurant News included Smalls Sliders in its “Breakout Brands of 2023”and QSR Magazine mentioned it in its annual QSR 50 Contenders list.
While it’s fast food, quality is important to Landry and his partners. They never use heat lamps here – the sliders are cooked to order – and they spent years searching for the perfect brioche bun. It seems like the Smalls Sliders team took everything into consideration, including the “meat/bun ratio.” Louisiana Chef John Folse gets credit for the recipe for their Smauce®. It, and the queso, are the perfect dips for both the cheeseburgers and their waffle fries.
Drew Brees has been part of Smalls Sliders since its inception. According to CEO Maria Rivera, “His passion and commitment to our vision and values have been a driving force of our growth and brand culture, and we are proud to partner with him in Metairie and beyond.”
All we can say is it’s perfect food to take to the parade route. Swing by this Carnival season.
