Restaurant Overview

One of the nice things about Houmas House is that you don’t have to make a full evening of fine dining to enjoy a memorable meal on the property. The Carriage House Restaurant offers a more relaxed way to experience Houmas House, with lunch and dinner served in an elegant setting that still feels comfortable enough for families, a leisurely lunch or an impromptu stop along River Road. Reservations aren’t required, although they are recommended.

For those of us who grew up around South Louisiana cooking, Executive Chef Jeremy Langlois’ menu hits a sweet spot: familiar dishes presented with a little extra polish. You’ll find Gulf seafood, gumbo, po-boys and hearty Louisiana flavors alongside steaks, pasta and other approachable favorites. Current offerings include a Louisiana seafood po-boy, shrimp pasta in a Creole tomato cream sauce, pan-seared redfish topped with jumbo lump crab and meunière sauce, and a double-cut pork chop stuffed with boudin.

There are plenty of good starters, too. The crab and mango cake comes with chili remoulade and mango salsa, while the diver scallops are paired with Houmas House beehive honey and a parsley gastrique. The menu also features chicken and andouille gumbo and the signature curried pumpkin, crawfish and corn bisque — exactly the sort of dishes that make sense when you’re dining in this part of Louisiana.

Of course, the atmosphere is part of the appeal. The Carriage House is attached to the Turtle Bar, making it easy to start or finish your meal with a cocktail, and the restaurant’s setting manages to feel both special and unfussy. Houmas House also uses the space for celebrations, bridal luncheons, rehearsal dinners and other private events.

One suggestion: Give yourself time to enjoy the whole property. Come for lunch after touring the mansion and gardens or make the drive from New Orleans for an early dinner and a stroll around the grounds. The Carriage House is the kind of place where you can bring visiting relatives, celebrate a birthday or simply turn an ordinary afternoon into a little Louisiana getaway.

For locals, that may be the restaurant’s biggest charm. You get the scenery and sense of occasion that come with Houmas House without having to save it exclusively for a major celebration. With Chef Jeremy Langlois guiding the culinary program, The Carriage House gives you a comfortable, approachable taste of Louisiana in one of River Road’s most distinctive settings.
